Cast:
Yusef Salaam is an American politician, a motivational speaker, and activist, serving as a member for New York City's 9th City Council district. Salaam is a member of the Exonerated Five.
Kate Boccia is the mother of Daniel Boccia and is the CEO/Founder of the National Incarceration Association.
Sir Brown is currently serving life without the possibility of parole. He is a peacemaker behind the wire and his unwavering commitment to bring about change inside prison is witnessed by every person who comes into contact with him.
Betty Anne Waters put herself through college and law school for the sole purpose of helping her brother, Kenneth Waters who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1983. Betty Anne worked tirelessly with the Innocence Project to bring about his exoneration in 2001. Her story was made into a Hollywood film titled 'Conviction' and starring Hilary Swank as Betty Anne and Sam Rockwell as her brother, Kenneth Waters.
Evelyn Ware Cox is the mother of Michael Cox, who is currently incarcerated for life. She is also a prison ministry advocate.
Billy Jo Holmes (Big Billy) served 30 years in prison. He is now a mentor and frequently requested speaker to audiences across several states on the topic of systems that fail to correct and rehabilitate.
Kit Cummings is the founder of the Power of Peace Project, author, conflict mediator and tirelessly works to bring about change in the prison system.
At any moment, one of our children, or friends, family, or colleagues could make a bad decision like driving under the influence of alcohol for instance, and possibly injure or kill someone in that situation. They are then sentenced to a life of hell. Not just the prison system (which does not rehabilitate well, if you look at recidivism rates in the USA), but this digital punishment - the scarlet letter - that follows them around for life. When someone is released from prison, they are rarely allowed to secure a good job or live in a decent neighborhood where the landlords aren't slumlords. Most reasonable apartment buildings do full background checks now before allowing a person to sign a lease.
‘Living UN DONE’ breaks down the effects of a system that produces a population affected by atrocious experiences. A system seemingly designed to break both prisoners and their loved ones.
While this story is not entirely unique, we are bringing attention to how different systems work together and are intrinsically linked. We explore the system of digital punishment and mass incarceration, the mental health effects on previously incarcerated individuals as well as currently incarcerated individuals; and big pharma/drug misuse/addiction. We present a case for effective rehabilitation: measures that can and could be implemented, for the betterment of returning citizens and society as a whole.
We wanted to cross political divides with this film, because this topic and these systems aren't political. These systems are not a Conservative versus Liberal conversation. They are systems that we have ALL bought into. We are ALL stakeholders in these systems, and it will take ALL of us to shift these systems at a systemic level.
Even if all sides don't agree on how to "fix" these systems, throughout the filming process, we quickly learned that all sides of the political spectrum want their streets safe for their kids. That's where we were able to find the common ground. The common value: Wellbeing. For ourselves and all others.
So, that's where we began.
